Total Abdominal Ultrasound
Public Sono Ai Report guide about Total Abdominal Ultrasound, with context, preparation notes, references and safety limits for ultrasound use.
What is a total abdominal ultrasound
Total abdominal ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of organs and structures in the abdomen. It is usually requested for abdominal pain, check-ups, abnormal laboratory tests, suspected gallstones or kidney stones, evaluation of the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, biliary tract, pancreas (when visible), spleen, aorta, and free fluid.
“Total abdomen” does not mean everything will be seen with the same quality. The ultrasound is safe and does not use ionizing radiation, but bowel gas, inadequate fasting, pain, body type, and acoustic window can limit parts of the exam.

Preparation and documents
The guidance of the responsible clinic always prevails. In many facilities, abdominal ultrasound requires fasting to reduce gas and allow better evaluation of the gallbladder, liver, pancreas, and aorta. When kidneys and bladder are included in the request, there may also be instructions to drink water and arrive with a full bladder.
- Confirm fasting hours, water, and medications before the exam.
- If you have diabetes, fluid restriction, kidney disease, or use insulin, confirm your individual prep.
- Bring the medical request, ID, previous exams, and a list of medications when possible.
- Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to open in the abdominal region.
Terms that appear in the report
The report separates technique, findings, and impression. When in doubt, avoid interpreting an isolated word as a complete diagnosis; take the result to the physician who requested the exam.

What the exam does not resolve alone
Ultrasound can find stones, dilations, fluid, organ alterations, and important clues, but not all abdominal pain appears on an ultrasound. Some causes depend on physical examination, blood tests, urine tests, CT scans, endoscopy, colonoscopy, or specialized evaluation.
It is also common for the report to mention limitation due to gas or an unvisualized pancreas. This should be understood as a real technical limit, not as a guarantee of normality.
When not to wait for the scheduled exam
An elective ultrasound should not delay care when there are signs of severity. Seek medical advice or emergency care if any of these signs occur:
